How to Handle Toddler Tantrums in Public: 7 Calm Tricks

  It happens to the best of us. You are in the checkout line at the grocery store, and your toddler melts down because you won't buy the candy bar. Everyone is staring. What do you do? 1. Do Not Negotiate with Terrorists: If you buy the candy bar to make them stop crying, you have just taught them, "Crying  = Candy." You must hold your boundary, no matter how loud they scream. 2. Get Down on Their Level. Don't stand over them. Kneel down so you are eye-to-eye. It makes you less threatening and helps them focus on your voice. 3. Name the Emotion Toddlers often scream because they don't have the words to say, "I'm frustrated." Say it for them: "I know you are mad because you want the candy. It is hard to hear 'no.'"  Sometimes, just feeling understood stops the tears. 4. The "Distraction" Technique Toddlers have short attention spans.
