The $20 Upgrade That Will Double Your Baby's Nap Length

Light is a drug. When sunlight hits a baby's optic nerve, their brain screams: "WAKE UP! It's party time!" Even a tiny sliver of light coming through the blinds can cut a nap short by an hour.

If your baby wakes up with the sun (or refuses to nap at noon), your room isn't dark enough. You want "Cave Darkness." You should not be able to see your hand in front of your face.

The Fix: Blackout Curtains. Standard curtains are useless. You need curtains labeled "100% Blackout."

  • The Test: Hold the fabric up to a lightbulb in the store. If you can see the bulb through the fabric, don't buy it.

  • The Travel Hack: If you are renting or traveling, buy Portable Blackout Shades with suction cups. You can stick them directly to the glass in minutes.

Darkness triggers melatonin (the sleep hormone). Buy the curtains, and buy yourself an extra hour of silence.
